“No one can lose you, my God, unless he forsakes you. And if he forsakes you, where is he to go? If he abandons your love, his only refuge is your wrath.” – St. Augustine, Confessions, IV,ix
“Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.” Jesus, Matt. 7:13,14
“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” – Jesus, Jn 14:6
Every human being has two witnesses which will testify against him on the day of judgment: His God-given conscience which knows lying, adultery, blasphemy, coveting, stealing, greed, dishonoring God, etc. are wrong, and God’s creation all around us that shows us He really does exist. We have no excuse for our choices and actions in this life, and God must punish us with death (hell) accordingly.
YET, the Gospel is GOOD NEWS. God sent His Only Son, Jesus, to bear upon Himself every ounce of punishment we deserve. God the Father crushed His Son, nailing Him to the Cross, killing Him to provide us a way to escape our due “reward” for our many sins. When He raised Him to life again on the third day, Christ conquered death and now God, in His infinite kindness, offers us life again instead of death.
Freedom instead of punishment.
A new start instead of a guilty conscience.
The Gospel is this: If you will humble yourself before your Judge and plead for mercy, repent of your crimes, and by faith accept what His Son did for you and surrender before Him you can be saved; moving out from between the cross-hairs of God’s just wrath (which He takes no pleasure in whatsoever, by the way). He will embrace you as His very own adopted son or daughter, purchased with the very life of His Son. Thereafter you can enjoy your Creator like He originally intended. That is the love, grace and mercy of the Lord!
There are only two possible places to be in this world: Enjoying God’s love or taking refuge in His wrath.
Beloved, where are you?
